Started in 1925, the John C. Campbell Folk School was developed in the tradition of the folkehojskoles (folk schools) of rural Denmark, but is focused on preserving and spreading the crafts, techniques and tools of Applachaian Americans.

Savannah Music Festival

For a major American music festival, this one may be the hardest to define by a genre or theme. Spanning 17 days and more than 100 performances, the Savannah Music Festival is an extremely eclectic showcasing of styles; roots to jazz, classical to zydeco are all packed into venues that range from churches to a restored apothecary.

Oxford Film Festival

Each year, filmmakers and cinema aficionados descend on Oxford, Mississippi for four days to celebrate artistic heritage, Southern hospitality and the independent spirit – and to watch dozens of films. The Oxford Film Festival kicks off its eighth season with an opening night extravaganza February 10 followed by a weekend of new, challenging and unusual films (presented by those that create them) February 11-13.

Serenbe

Serenbe began as a concern about what was going to happen in our backyard – we were trying to protect the countryside we loved so much from sprawl – little did I know this was going to become a national model. If we would all take care of our own backyard, we could make a huge difference.”

The 1,000 acre community just south of Atlanta known as Serenbe is quite a marvel. It’s an unexpected experience walking around the organic farmland, new eco friendly homes, acclaimed restaurants, boutique shops, horse stables and a restored inn. But as founder Steve Nygren told us, “Some of the richness of life is in the 90 degree turn. When you make a shift into unknown waters, it’s frightening, but the beauty of that journey is there are no expectations.”
