Wild Child

Alexander Beggins and Kelsey Wilson lived only a few streets apart in Austin’s Hyde Park district, but it took a six-week tour with a Scandinavian band to pave the way for them to become self-proclaimed “musical soul mates.”

The 1861 Project

As this year marks the 150th anniversary since the beginning of America’s Civil War, tributes, memorials and events continue to pop up paying respect to the memory and lives of those lost on both sides. While some are excessively sentimental and others are an unfortunate caricature, one project pays homage with a raw, honest approach that speaks to the human condition of that time and place.

Bluegrass Underground

Before audio recordings ever captured rural acoustic American roots music, listening to bluegrass live was an improvisational experience. Like jazz, part of the beauty of the sound was in the element of not knowing what the performers would do next. And while we could keep extoling the unexpected nature of live bluegrass, we’d rather direct you an unexpected Southern venue – down into a Tennessee cave, 333 feet below the surface.

MUTEMATH’S Odd Soul

Building on its genre-blending reputation of innovation and progressivism, MUTEMATH has reconstructed and come back with a rock and roll tour de force. Their upcoming project Odd Soul, trades in much of their previous ambient and electronic elements for a grittier blues, classic rock and psychedelic groove that strikes hard from the opener and rarely lets up for 13 tracks.

As we enter the final months of the year we thought it would be a good time to look back at a few of the musical highlights that Southern artists have given us so far in 2011. While there are still some highly anticipated releases that will drop in the fall, the South can be proud of what our musicians have created lately. From Texas to Tennessee, Kentucky to Georgia, here are 11 tunes and their creators worth noting this year.
