Billykirk

Having been born and raised in Memphis, Tenn., and with family roots from all over the South, Chris and Kirk Bray understand the importance of heritage, nostalgia and the value of a source. Producing premium leather goods since 1999 under the banner of Billykirk, the brothers’ handmade operation crafts some of the finest wallets, journals, belts, bags and accessories.

With a timeless design and attention to premium quality construction, all their goods are made in the U.S. and 80% of their collection is produced by Amish leather makers. Bucking the temporary, throw-away mentality of our current culture, Chris and Kirk put pride, care and time into each of their leather goods.

While living in Los Angeles, their brand was inspired by a vintage leather watch strap. Intrigued by its craftsmanship and simple design, they set out to apply their talents as artists and designers and apprenticed for 3 years under a third generation leaker maker. To this day, they still do the hand stitching and finishing work in their shop just outside New York.

Chris and Kirk craft their products making details prominent at the beginning stages, and not as an after-thought or a finishing effort. Often a simple hook or buckle will inspire a design or at other times a classic movie or military wear will spark an idea. Using the highest quality materials and following a traditional process of treating leather with natural oils and vegetable dyes, all culminates into an understated and rugged-looking product, void of garish details. They actually prefer their work to blend in to the aesthetic of the wearer’s attire, and let the organic nature of the leather speak for itself.

The brothers have never been able to get excited about anything mass produced, and they believe their customers operate from that same philosophy. Working with Amish leather workers only underscored that standard. That community isn’t caught up in our society’s marketing and consumerism, but rather the satisfaction found in making a durable product.
